Tambopata National Reserve 3 Days

Upon your arrival at the Puerto Maldonado airport or bus terminal, your guide will meet you for a welcome registration. Any luggage you do not need in the jungle can be stored safely at the Amazon Garden Lodge office in Puerto Maldonado, and you will have a brief opportunity to visit the town's Plaza Grau viewpoint overlooking the spectacular confluence of the Madre de Dios and Tambopata Rivers. At the Port of Capitania, you will board a traditional Amazonian motorized canoe for the wonderful 40-minute boat journey along the Madre de Dios River to the Amazon Garden Lodge — your home for the next two nights — where you will be welcomed with fresh tropical fruit juice before settling into your comfortable private bungalow surrounded by primary rainforest. Your first jungle adventure begins with a guided walk through the forest to the canopy walkway and suspension bridge, where your expert guide will introduce you to the extraordinary flora and fauna of the Amazon canopy, followed by the thrilling 190-meter zip line flying above the jungle canopy, a 75-meter suspension bridge, and a return by a second 160-meter zip line, all with full safety equipment provided. After a well-earned lunch and a restful break in the riverside hammocks, the afternoon continues with a kayak expedition on the Madre de Dios River (with a safety support boat accompanying the group), including a chance to swim in the warm river and a visit to the famous Monkey Island, a natural river island adjacent to the lodge inhabited by a resident group of monkeys that allow for extraordinary close encounters. After dinner, the adventure continues with a nocturnal caiman safari by boat, with a powerful reflector light identifying caimans in the shallows and on the beaches while your guide watches for nocturnal birds, capybaras, and other creatures active after dark.

Day 2 is dedicated entirely to one of the most magnificent and wildlife-rich destinations in the entire Tambopata National Reserve — the spectacular Sandoval Lake (Lago Sandoval). At 8:00 AM you will board a motorized boat for a 10-minute river journey to the lake entrance, followed by a 3-kilometer guided jungle hike of approximately 45 minutes through beautiful primary rainforest to reach the shores of the lake, with your guide identifying the remarkable diversity of tropical flora, birds, insects, reptiles, and amphibians along the way. Upon reaching the lake, you will have the option to swim in its cool, clear waters before boarding a paddle boat to explore the surface. Sandoval Lake is one of the most reliable and celebrated locations in the Tambopata Reserve for observing giant river otters — one of the most spectacular and endangered mammals in South America — along with hoatzins, cormorants, anhingas, black caimans, and an outstanding diversity of tropical waterbirds and jungle wildlife. A delicious traditional jungle lunch is included at the lakeside, followed by an afternoon of continued wildlife observation and photography before the return hike and boat journey back to Amazon Garden Lodge.

The final and most spectacular morning of your Tambopata adventure begins before sunrise with a 4:30 AM boat departure from the lodge for the approximately 1.5-hour journey along the Madre de Dios River to the famous Cachuela parrot clay lick — one of the most breathtaking natural wildlife events in the entire Amazon region. Arriving at the clay wall at approximately 6:00 AM, your group positions at a safe and strategic distance to watch as the extraordinary spectacle begins: hundreds of blue-headed parrots, aurora parakeets, and multiple other parrot species (and occasionally macaws) arrive in colorful, noisy waves to consume the mineral-rich clay from the natural wall — a behavior that helps them neutralize the dietary toxins in their jungle diet. The sight of brilliant parrots in flight against the backdrop of the awakening Amazon and a beautiful river sunrise is a genuinely breathtaking and deeply memorable experience, and the perfect final wildlife encounter of your adventure. The activity lasts approximately 1 hour. Afterward, you will return to the lodge for a final breakfast before boarding the boat back to Puerto Maldonado and onward transfer to the airport or bus terminal, bringing your extraordinary three-day Amazon adventure to a close.
