Manu National Park 6 Days

Your expedition begins with a hotel pickup in Cusco between 5:30 and 6:00 AM in a comfortable private vehicle. The first day's journey is itself one of the most spectacular and diverse driving routes in all of Peru, descending from the cold Andean highlands through multiple ecological zones to the warm tropical lowlands of the Amazon basin. Your first cultural stop is the remarkable Chullpas of Ninamarca — a fascinating collection of ancient cylindrical funerary towers built by pre-Inca cultures at 3,750 m / 12,303 ft, once used to house the mummified remains of community leaders. A brief stop follows in the charming colonial town of Paucartambo, famous for its beautifully preserved 17th-century colonial bridge and its deep folkloric traditions. At the Acjanaco Pass (4,000 m / 13,123 ft) — the official entrance point to Manu National Park — you will experience the dramatic transition from cold Andean highlands into the lush, humid world of the cloud forest. A guided walk here offers wonderful opportunities to observe orchids, heliconias, primitive ferns, and a remarkable diversity of birdlife; the highlight is the spectacular Andean Cock-of-the-Rock (Peru's national bird), and with some luck your guide may also spot trogons, quetzals, cloud forest monkeys, and the elusive Spectacled Bear. By late afternoon, you will arrive in the town of Pilcopata (550 m / 1,804 ft), where you will spend the night at a comfortable jungle lodge with private rooms, bathrooms, and hot showers.

After breakfast, a 45-minute bus ride brings you to the port of Atalaya (490 m), where your motorized boat is waiting. The 6 to 7-hour motorized boat journey along the Alto Madre de Dios River is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences of the entire expedition. As you travel deeper into the Manu basin, the landscape becomes progressively wilder and more untouched; you will pass herons, kingfishers, vultures, and the increasingly frequent sight of white caimans, river turtles, and capybaras on the banks, with your guide identifying species throughout the journey. You will stop at Boca Manu (280 m), the confluence of the Manu and Madre de Dios Rivers, where you pass through the Limonal park rangers control post — the entry checkpoint into the Reserved Zone of Manu National Park. In the afternoon, you will arrive at your lodge near Cocha Otorongo (250 m) — one of the most wildlife-rich oxbow lakes in the entire Reserved Area. Shortly after arrival, you will visit the lake and climb the spectacular 30-meter wildlife observation tower, offering extraordinary panoramic views over the jungle canopy and the lake below, from which you can observe giant river otters, turtles, and diverse birds in their completely undisturbed natural habitat. In this part of Manu, wildlife has never been hunted by humans, making encounters remarkably close and completely natural.

Day 3 is dedicated to the extraordinary Cocha Salvador — the largest oxbow lake in the Manu Reserved Zone, located approximately 30 minutes from Cocha Otorongo. You will board a silent catamaran raft to paddle quietly across the pristine lake surface, maximizing your chances of observing wildlife without disturbance. Cocha Salvador is one of the most reliable locations in the entire Amazon for observing giant river otters — one of the most charismatic and endangered mammals in South America — along with an extraordinary diversity of exotic birds including the Purple Gallinule and the spectacular Agami Heron. The monkey diversity here is remarkable, and your guide will almost certainly identify at least 12 different primate species during your time in this area. The afternoon brings a guided walk along the main jungle trails through untouched primary Amazonian rainforest — a genuinely humbling experience in one of the most complex and biodiverse ecosystems on earth — with your specialized guide explaining the functioning, ecology, and extraordinary secrets of the tropical forest. An optional nocturnal walk is available for those who wish to discover the extraordinary world of Amazon night life.

Day 4 begins before sunrise with one of the most spectacular wildlife events in all of South America — the macaw clay lick at the Salvadorcillo Ravine. Dozens of brilliantly colored macaws and parrots descend on a natural clay wall in the early morning light to consume mineral-rich clay — a breathtaking, vibrant, and deeply memorable spectacle of color, sound, and life. After the clay lick, you will visit Cocha Brasco — another remarkable oxbow lake within the Reserved Area — for an additional opportunity to observe giant river otters and other wildlife in this extraordinarily pristine environment. The afternoon brings a scenic return journey downstream along the Manu River to Boca Manu, observing the remarkable biodiversity of the riverbanks throughout. You will spend the night at a comfortable lodge in Boca Manu with bathrooms and showers.

Day 5 brings the return boat journey along the Alto Madre de Dios River toward the Paititi Lodge — retracing the route from Day 2 with fresh eyes and your guide's continuing expertise in identifying the remarkable diversity of birds and wildlife along the riverbanks. With some luck, additional memorable wildlife encounters will reward your attentiveness throughout the journey. You will arrive at the comfortable Paititi Lodge in the afternoon and spend the night in private rooms with private showers and bathrooms — a welcome return to greater comfort after the more rustic nights deep in the Reserved Area.

The final day of the expedition begins with a farewell breakfast at the Paititi Lodge before boarding the motorized boat for the return journey to the port of Atalaya. From Atalaya, your private vehicle begins the long and spectacular return drive to Cusco, passing once again through the extraordinary cloud forest — a beautiful final opportunity to observe the lush vegetation and wildlife of this remarkable ecosystem. You will arrive back in Cusco at approximately 6:00 to 6:30 PM, with drop-off at Plaza Regocijo in the city center — half a block from the Plaza de Armas — completing one of the most extraordinary and genuinely life-changing wildlife expeditions available anywhere in South America.
