Tambopata National Reserve 2 Days

Upon your arrival at the Puerto Maldonado airport or bus terminal, your guide meets you for welcome registration and luggage handling — any bags you do not need in the jungle can be stored safely at the Amazon Garden Lodge office in town. Before boarding, you visit the Plaza Grau viewpoint to admire the spectacular confluence of the Madre de Dios and Tambopata Rivers. At the Port of Capitania you board a traditional motorized canoe for the scenic 40-minute journey along the Madre de Dios River to the Amazon Garden Lodge, where you are welcomed with a glass of fresh tropical fruit juice before settling into your private bungalow. Your first jungle adventure is a guided walk through primary rainforest to the canopy walkway and suspension bridge, followed by the thrilling 190-meter zip line — with full safety briefing and equipment — flying above the canopy, crossing a 75-meter suspension bridge, and returning by a second 160-meter zip line. After a well-deserved lunch and a rest in the riverside hammocks, the afternoon continues with a kayak expedition on the Madre de Dios River (accompanied by a safety support boat, with a chance to swim in the warm waters) to the beloved Monkey Island, home to a resident group of monkeys that allow for extraordinary close encounters. You return to the lodge at sunset, watching the sky turn golden over the river. After dinner, the day concludes with a thrilling nocturnal caiman safari by boat, when a powerful reflector light reveals caimans on the beaches and in the shallows, along with nocturnal birds, capybaras, and other creatures of the night.

Day 2 is dedicated to the extraordinary Sandoval Lake (Lago Sandoval) — one of the most famous, beautiful, and wildlife-rich destinations in the entire Tambopata National Reserve. After breakfast at the lodge, you board a motorized boat at 8:00 AM for a 10-minute river journey to the lake entrance, followed by a 3-kilometer guided jungle hike of about 45 minutes through pristine primary rainforest, where your naturalist guide identifies the remarkable diversity of tropical flora, birds, insects, reptiles, and amphibians. On reaching the lake, you board a paddle boat to explore its magnificent surface in peaceful silence. Sandoval Lake is one of the most celebrated and reliable places in all of Tambopata for observing giant river otters — one of the most spectacular and endangered mammals in South America — along with hoatzins, cormorants, anhingas, black caimans, and a remarkable variety of tropical waterbirds. A delicious traditional jungle lunch is served at the lakeside, followed by further wildlife observation and photography before the afternoon return hike to the river. You are then transferred back to Puerto Maldonado and dropped off at the airport or bus terminal, completing your extraordinary two-day Amazon adventure.
