Sandoval Lake Full Day
The Best One-Day Amazon Experience in Tambopata
Full day · Moderate · Small group
Overview
For travelers who have just one day to experience the extraordinary beauty and wildlife of the Peruvian Amazon, the Sandoval Lake Full-Day Tour from Puerto Maldonado is the finest and most rewarding choice available. This expertly guided adventure takes you deep into the Tambopata National Reserve to explore the magnificent Sandoval Lake, an immaculate oxbow lake surrounded by dense primary rainforest, towering Amazon palms, and extraordinary wildlife in a state of remarkable natural abundance.
Located just 8 kilometers from Puerto Maldonado inside the strictly protected Tambopata National Reserve, Sandoval Lake is one of the most celebrated wildlife destinations in the entire Peruvian Amazon. The chance to observe the resident family of giant river otters gliding silently through the morning water is consistently described by visitors as one of the most powerful wildlife encounters available anywhere in South America.
Your adventure begins in Puerto Maldonado with a scenic 45-minute motorized boat journey along the Madre de Dios River, followed by a 3-kilometer guided jungle hike to the lake. You then explore its waters by traditional paddle canoe, one of the most peaceful and effective ways to observe wildlife, with close encounters with giant otters, black caimans, hoatzins, kingfishers, herons, monkeys, and river turtles. A jungle box lunch is included on a small island, and the late afternoon brings the spectacle of hundreds of parrots and macaws returning to roost as the sun sets over the Amazon.

Itinerary
your day, hour by hour
Between 8:30 and 9:00 AM. Your adventure begins at our authorized office in Puerto Maldonado, where your bilingual guide meets you, gives a brief overview of the day's itinerary and important practical tips, and then escorts you to the port on the Madre de Dios River.
A wonderful 45-minute motorized boat journey downstream along the Madre de Dios River to the entrance checkpoint of the Sandoval Lake Reserve. Along the river you catch your first glimpses of Amazon wildlife, from herons and kingfishers to local fishing communities along the banks. At the reserve entrance your guide completes your registration and entry.
A 3-kilometer guided hike (about 45 minutes) through primary Amazonian rainforest to the shores of Sandoval Lake. Your guide identifies the extraordinary diversity of tropical flora, including the many Amazon palm species that characterize this ecosystem, as well as insects, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. With some luck you may spot monkeys or river turtles before even reaching the lake.
At the lake you board a traditional paddle canoe, moved silently by oars for minimum disturbance to the wildlife. During about an hour of morning canoeing your guide scans the surface and shores for the full diversity of Sandoval Lake wildlife. The resident family of giant river otters is the most celebrated attraction, often visible fishing and playing on the water, alongside black caimans, river turtles, hoatzins, cormorants, anhingas, kingfishers, and herons.
After the morning session you disembark on one of the small islands within the lake for a traditional Amazonian box lunch, with about 30 to 40 minutes of free time to eat, relax, and absorb the remarkable peace and beauty of the environment.
You board the canoe again for a second session of wildlife observation, often the most productive time for giant otter sightings as the afternoon activity patterns shift. As the light softens, you may be treated to one of the most magical moments of the day: the spectacle of hundreds of parrots and macaws returning noisily to roost in the giant trees around the lake as the sun sets over the Amazon.
You complete the 45-minute return jungle hike to the reserve entrance and board the boat for the 45-minute journey back along the Madre de Dios River, watching the last light of the Amazon sunset over the water. You arrive in Puerto Maldonado at approximately 4:00 PM, where the tour concludes.
