The route winds through the Ausangate Cordillera, passing seven stunning glacial lakes, each with its own color and character, from deep turquoise and jade green to electric blue and silver grey depending on the light and season. Along the way you will encounter herds of llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas grazing freely across the high plateau, as well as a rich variety of Andean birds soaring above the glaciers.

Your professional bilingual guide accompanies you throughout, sharing insights into the geology, ecology, and profound cultural significance of the Ausangate massif in Andean cosmology.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Ausangate 7 Lakes Trek?
It is a full-day high-altitude hiking experience through the stunning glacial landscape surrounding Mount Ausangate, the highest peak in the Cusco region at 6,384 m. The route passes seven magnificent glacial lakes, each with a unique color and character, set against snow-capped peaks, vast open valleys, and abundant Andean wildlife. It is widely considered one of the most spectacular trekking experiences available from Cusco.
How difficult is the trek?
The trek is moderately challenging, primarily due to the high altitude rather than the technical difficulty of the terrain. The trail reaches a maximum of approximately 5,100 m and involves several hours of continuous walking across uneven terrain. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended, as is a minimum of two to three days of acclimatization in Cusco beforehand.
How long is the trek in total?
The active trekking portion lasts approximately 5 to 6 hours in total, including stops at the lakes, rest breaks, and free time for photography. Combined with the drive from Cusco and the return journey, this is a full and rewarding day from start to finish.
What altitude does the trek reach?
The trek takes place at altitudes ranging between 4,600 m and 5,100 m above sea level. These are significant altitudes where altitude sickness can be felt even by fit individuals, so proper acclimatization in Cusco beforehand is essential.
Is the Ausangate 7 Lakes Trek suitable for beginners?
The trek is suitable for travelers with a reasonable level of fitness who have spent sufficient time acclimatizing in Cusco. It is not recommended for travelers with heart or respiratory conditions, or for those who have not yet acclimatized. Children and older travelers are welcome but should consult their physician beforehand.
What is the best time of year to do the trek?
The best time is during the dry season, between May and October, when skies are clearest, trails are most stable, and the colors of the lakes and mountains are at their most vivid. The rainy season (November to April) is still possible but may involve wet trail conditions and reduced visibility on some days.
Is Mount Ausangate sacred to local communities?
Yes, profoundly so. Ausangate is revered as one of the most important Apus (mountain deities) in Andean cosmology and holds deep spiritual significance for the Quechua communities of the Cusco region. It is the site of the famous Qoyllur Rit'i festival, one of the largest indigenous religious pilgrimages in South America.
Will I see wildlife on the trek?
Yes. The Ausangate area is home to a rich variety of Andean wildlife. Throughout the trek you are very likely to encounter llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas on the high plateau, as well as Andean birds including the iconic condor, ducks, Andean geese, and flamingos near the glacial lakes.
Is horse riding available on this trek?
Yes. Horse-riding assistance is available along sections of the trail for an additional fee, payable directly to the local handlers on the day. It is a great option for travelers who need extra support on the longer or more demanding sections.
