Ausangate & Rainbow Mountain 3 Days
High-Altitude Andean Adventure
3 days · Moderate to challenging · Max. 6,372 m · Up to 16
Overview
For adventurous travelers who want a shorter but equally extraordinary version of the Ausangate circuit — combining the breathtaking high-altitude scenery of the Cordillera Vilcanota, the sacred presence of Ausangate Mountain, and the world-famous spectacle of Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) — the Ausangate Trek and Rainbow Mountain 3 Days / 2 Nights is one of the most spectacular and rewarding trekking experiences available anywhere in the Peruvian Andes.
The Ausangate massif (6,372 m / 20,905 ft) is the highest and most sacred mountain in the Cusco region — revered since pre-Inca times as a powerful Apu (mountain deity). Across three extraordinary days, you will cross multiple high Andean passes reaching above 5,100 m / 16,732 ft, explore pristine glacial lakes including Hatun Pucacocha and Huchuy Pucacocha whose brilliant colors reflect the glaciers above, encounter remote Quechua herder communities and their herds of llamas and alpacas, and witness the extraordinary natural scenery of the Vilcanota range from perspectives that very few travelers ever experience.
The journey culminates on Day 3 with the ascent to the summit viewpoint of the legendary Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) at 5,100 m / 16,732 ft — one of Peru's most extraordinary natural wonders and one of only two places in the entire world where this remarkable geological phenomenon of multi-colored mineral sediment layers can be observed. The sight of Vinicunca's striking bands of red, yellow, green, white, and purple against the backdrop of the surrounding snow-capped Andes is a genuinely breathtaking experience — and after two days of extraordinary high-altitude trekking, reaching it feels like a deeply earned personal achievement.
This is a compact and intense three-day adventure designed for physically fit travelers with a genuine passion for high-altitude wilderness, Andean culture, and some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in South America. All camping equipment, meals, professional guides, horses and muleteers, and trek entrance fees are fully included.

Day-by-day itinerary
3 days · what you'll do each day
Your high-altitude adventure begins at 5:00 AM with a hotel pickup in Cusco, followed by a 3-hour scenic private vehicle journey through the remote Andean highlands to the small highland community of Upis (4,250 m / 13,944 ft) — your trailhead and the gateway to the Ausangate circuit. Upon arrival, you will enjoy a first hearty breakfast prepared by your chef, with extraordinary first views of the sacred Ausangate Mountain towering above the valley. After meeting your muleteers and horses, the trek begins with a gentle 3-hour ascent through a beautiful high Andean valley with sweeping views of the surrounding peaks, passing through the grazing lands of local Quechua communities where herds of llamas and alpacas roam freely. After a delicious hot lunch, the afternoon brings the day's most demanding section — a 2-hour uphill climb to the Arapa Pass at 4,800 m / 15,748 ft, from which the panoramic views of the Cordillera Vilcanota stretching in every direction are extraordinary and deeply memorable. The subsequent 3.5-hour descent brings you down to the campsite beside the magnificent Hatun Pucacocha glacial lake — situated directly at the foot of the Ausangate massif, with the great glacier rising dramatically above you. At camp, hot chocolate and coffee will be waiting, and dinner is prepared and served by your chef and assistant. On clear nights at this altitude, the complete absence of light pollution creates one of the most extraordinary stargazing and Milky Way viewing opportunities available anywhere in Peru.
Day 2 begins gently with your guide bringing hot coca leaf tea directly to your tent as the early morning light illuminates the glacier above camp. After a nourishing breakfast, you will prepare for a demanding but extraordinarily beautiful day. The morning begins with a 2-hour sustained ascent to the Puca Pass at 4,870 m / 15,978 ft; along the way, your guide will point out striking eroded mountain formations, pristine high Andean valleys, the glacial lakes of Huchuy Pucacocha and Hatun Pucacocha in the valley below, and — if conditions are favorable — the magnificent and rare sight of an Andean condor soaring on the thermal currents above. After the pass, a 1.5-hour descent brings you to the beautiful highland valley of Anantapata — your lunch stop — where your chef will have a delicious hot meal waiting. After lunch, the most significant ascent of the day begins — a 2-hour uphill climb to the Warmisaya Pass at 4,985 m / 16,355 ft — from which the sacred Ausangate seen from a completely new angle, the endless expanse of the Vilcanota range, and — thrillingly — your first breathtaking glimpse of the distant Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) are all revealed simultaneously. The final 1-hour descent brings you to the second campsite at Surinecocha (4,800 m / 15,748 ft) — positioned tantalizingly close to Rainbow Mountain and perfectly placed for the early morning approach on Day 3. A warm welcome drink, afternoon snacks, and a dinner prepared by your chef complete a truly extraordinary second day in the mountains.
The final and most celebrated morning of the trek begins with breakfast at camp before setting off on the 2-hour ascent to the summit pass at 5,100 m / 16,732 ft — the highest point of the entire trek — from which the world-famous Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) is revealed in its full, extraordinary, and unmistakable glory. Standing before Rainbow Mountain after two days of extraordinary high-altitude trekking is a moment of pure, earned wonder. The remarkable geological phenomenon of Vinicunca — created over millions of years by the oxidation and erosion of different mineral sediment layers, producing striking bands of red, yellow, orange, green, white, and purple — is one of only two places in the entire world where this natural spectacle can be observed (the other being in China). Your guide will explain the fascinating geology, history, and sacred cultural significance of this extraordinary mountain while you have plenty of free time for photography, reflection, and fully absorbing the magnificent surrounding panorama of snow-capped Andean peaks. After Rainbow Mountain, the trail descends for 1 hour to the village of Llacto, where a delicious final included lunch will be waiting. After lunch, your private vehicle begins the approximately 3-hour return journey to Cusco, with a final drop-off at your hotel — completing one of the most spectacular and genuinely rewarding high-altitude adventures available anywhere in the Peruvian Andes.
