The main challenge is the altitude rather than the terrain, so we recommend spending at least two nights in Cusco before joining the tour.

Itinerary
your day, hour by hour
From 4:00 to 5:00 AM. Your adventure begins with a comfortable pick-up directly from your hotel or Airbnb in Cusco; the exact time depends on your location within the city. We strongly recommend spending at least one night acclimatizing in Cusco (3,399 m) before joining this tour so you can fully enjoy the experience.
We head south through breathtaking Andean countryside, passing traditional highland villages. After about 90 minutes we stop, around 7:00 to 7:30 AM, for a hearty and energizing breakfast at a welcoming local restaurant in the district of Cusipata (3,310 m), the perfect fuel before the trailhead and a great chance to savour authentic local flavours.
A short drive brings us to the district of Combapata (3,475 m) for a brief stop at its charming colonial bridge, a beautiful piece of Andean history and a wonderful spot for photos. We continue through dramatic high-altitude landscapes, passing the colonial bridge of Checacupe and the left bank of the Salka River. Keep your eyes open for native alpacas roaming freely, one of the most memorable moments of the journey.
We arrive at the Palcoyo community at around 10:00 AM, at 5,100 m. You will have approximately one to one and a half hours of free exploration to enjoy the three colorful mountains. Your bilingual guide explains the geology, history, and cultural significance of the area, and you can take photos with local community members while soaking in the breathtaking landscape.
Next you set out on a guided walk through the Palcoyo Stone Forest, a surreal formation of towering rock columns that adds an exceptional highlight to the adventure, with sweeping views toward the majestic Ausangate Glacier. This portion lasts about one hour, after which you have free time to enjoy the scenery and take photos at your own pace before returning to the parking area.
By around 1:50 to 2:30 PM we make our way back down on foot to the Palcoyo community, enjoying a fresh perspective of the landscape on the descent. Back at the restaurant in Cusipata by approximately 2:30 PM, we sit down to a well-deserved traditional Andean buffet lunch prepared with fresh local ingredients: hearty soups, authentic Peruvian specialties, fresh salads, and vegetarian options.
We begin the scenic journey back to Cusco at around 3:00 PM, arriving at approximately 6:00 PM and dropping you off just one block from the Main Square, tired, fulfilled, and carrying memories that will last a lifetime.

- Entry ticket to the Rainbow Mountains and Stone Forest. Not included. The total cost is S/ 20.00 soles per person, paid directly at the entrance gate upon arrival (cash, soles only).
- Travel insurance. Not included. We strongly recommend a valid travel insurance policy that covers adventure activities and high-altitude conditions.
- Gratuities. Tips are not included and are never required. If you feel your guide or driver provided exceptional service, a voluntary tip is always appreciated. Our staff are fairly compensated, so there is no obligation.
- Personal and extra expenses. Any additional expenses, such as handicrafts and souvenirs offered by local community members, are not included.
