Ausangate Trek 4 Days
The Most Spectacular High-Altitude Adventure in the Peruvian Andes
4 days · Demanding · Max. 6,384 m · Up to 8
Overview
Deep in the remote heart of the Cordillera Vilcanota — one of the highest and most awe-inspiring mountain ranges in all of Peru — lies one of the most extraordinary trekking experiences available anywhere in the Andes. The Ausangate Trek 4 Days to Rainbow Mountain takes you through some of the most breathtaking and least-visited high-altitude landscapes in the entire country, combining glacial lakes, ancient Quechua communities, vast llama and alpaca grazing plains, towering snow-capped peaks, and the spectacular natural wonder of Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) — the most famous and colorful mountain in all of Peru.
Ausangate (6,384 m / 20,942 ft) is the sacred mountain of the Cusco region — one of the most important Apus (mountain deities) in the entire Andean cosmological tradition — and the dominant presence throughout all four days of this extraordinary trek. Circumnavigating the flanks of this majestic peak, you will cross multiple high Andean passes at altitudes reaching up to 5,029 m / 16,500 ft, discover hidden glacial lakes of extraordinary beauty including Yana Qocha, Puka Qocha, and Qomer Qocha, encounter the traditional Quechua herder communities that have lived alongside Ausangate for generations, and witness the powerful, raw, and utterly magnificent scenery of the Peruvian high Andes in a way that is impossible from any road or day tour.
The emotional and visual pinnacle of the four-day journey is the visit on Day 4 to the world-famous Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) — a geological marvel created by the oxidation of different minerals in the mountain's rock layers, producing an extraordinary palette of red, yellow, green, and purple stripes that make it one of the most visually extraordinary natural wonders in all of South America. From the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint, you will also descend into the remarkable Red Valley — one of the most dramatic and surreal Andean landscapes on the entire route — before completing the trek and returning to Cusco.
This four-day adventure is designed for travelers with a good level of physical fitness and a genuine passion for high-altitude wilderness trekking, remote Andean landscapes, and authentic cultural encounters far from the tourist trail. All camping equipment, meals, professional guides, horses and muleteers, and trek entrance fees are fully included — ensuring a completely supported and deeply rewarding four-day high-altitude adventure.

Day-by-day itinerary
4 days · what you'll do each day
Your high-altitude adventure begins at 5:30 AM with a hotel pickup in Cusco, followed by a spectacular 3-hour scenic drive through the remote Andean highlands toward Upis Village at the foot of the Ausangate massif. The drive passes through extraordinary landscapes — rising above Cusco through traditional Quechua communities, over high passes, and into the remote Vilcanota Valley, one of the most beautiful and least-visited mountain valleys in the entire Cusco region. Upon arrival in Upis (4,300 m / 14,108 ft), you will meet your muleteers and horses before preparing your daypack for the first section of the trek. The opening day's hike is a gentle 3 to 4-hour ascent through a beautiful highland valley, winding upward through sweeping grasslands where herds of llamas and alpacas roam freely. The first campsite sits in a magnificent position close to the natural Upis Hot Springs (4,650 m / 15,256 ft; entrance fee of S/ 10 soles per person payable on site), with extraordinary views of the summit of Ausangate rising dramatically above the valley. After lunch at camp, the afternoon is yours to enjoy a deeply restorative soak in the thermal pools surrounded by the high Andes, or take a leisurely walk around the valley to photograph the breathtaking sunset over the Ausangate glacier. Dinner is prepared and served at camp by your dedicated cook.
Day 2 begins gently with your guide bringing hot coca leaf tea directly to your tent as the Andean dawn breaks over the glaciers — one of the most beautiful and peaceful morning rituals of the entire trek. After a nourishing breakfast at camp, you will prepare for the most demanding day of the journey. The morning begins with a sustained ascent toward the first high pass of the trek — Arapa Pass at 4,800 m / 15,748 ft — from which the panoramic views of the Cordillera Vilcanota stretching in every direction are extraordinary and deeply memorable. After the pass, a 1.5-hour descent brings you to lunch beside the beautiful Yana Qocha glacial lake, a pristine deep-blue body of water framed by the snow-covered slopes of Ausangate. After lunch, a further 2-hour trek across a stunning high Andean plain brings you to the second campsite at Puka Qocha (4,650 m), nestled close to the glacier lakes immediately beneath the towering walls of the Ausangate massif. The proximity to the glaciers here is dramatic and deeply impressive, with the powerful sound of calving ice echoing across the valley. On clear nights, the absence of any light pollution at this altitude creates one of the most extraordinary stargazing and Milky Way opportunities available anywhere in Peru.
Day 3 is the most physically challenging and most visually dramatic day of the entire trek, crossing two high Andean passes, both reaching 5,000 m / 16,404 ft, with extraordinary panoramic views of snow-capped peaks, highland valleys, and vivid red and orange hills in every direction. After breakfast, you will begin the demanding steep switchback ascent to the first pass at 5,000 m / 16,404 ft, from which the panorama stretches to snow-capped peaks in multiple directions and colorful highland valleys below. The descent brings you into a spectacular highland valley before the trail climbs again to the lunch spot at Ananta (4,600 m / 15,092 ft). After lunch, a 2-hour uphill climb brings you to the second pass of the day — Warmisaya (5,000 m / 16,404 ft) — from which your first breathtaking glimpse of the distant Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) is revealed, along with extraordinary panoramic views across the entire Vilcanota range. The final 30-minute descent leads to the third and final campsite at Qomer Qocha (4,680 m / 15,354 ft), positioned tantalizingly close to Rainbow Mountain and perfectly placed for an early morning approach on Day 4.
The final morning begins with breakfast at camp before the 1.5-hour hike to the summit viewpoint of the extraordinary Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) at 5,029 m / 16,500 ft — the geological wonder that has made the Ausangate region famous throughout the world. The mineral-rich layers of the mountain, oxidized over millions of years into striking bands of red, yellow, green, white, and purple, create a natural landscape so visually extraordinary that many travelers describe their first sight of it as genuinely surreal. You will have plenty of free time at Rainbow Mountain for photographs and reflection before the trail continues to the neighboring Red Valley — a captivating and dramatically beautiful Andean valley of pale crimson, ochre, and rust-colored hills that offers a completely different and equally extraordinary visual experience. After the Red Valley visit, a 1.5-hour descent brings you to the end of the trail, where you will bid farewell to your muleteers and cook before boarding your private vehicle for the return journey to Cusco. Lunch and dinner on Day 4 are at your own expense in Cusco.
