For travelers who are short on time but unwilling to compromise on the experience of a lifetime, the One-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is the perfect adventure. This extraordinary single-day expedition delivers everything that makes the Inca Trail legendary — ancient stone pathways, spectacular Andean cloud forest, remarkable Inca archaeological sites, and the most iconic arrival at Machu Picchu available to any visitor — all packed into one intense, deeply rewarding, and completely unforgettable day.

Beginning at the official trailhead at Kilometer 104, you follow the final 15 kilometers of the world-famous route, exploring the beautifully preserved ruins of Chachabamba and the spectacular Wiñay Wayna before arriving at the legendary Inti Punku (Sun Gate), where Machu Picchu is revealed below in full panoramic glory. You then descend to the upper terraces and the world-famous Classic Viewpoint — the most photographed perspective in all of Peru, accessible exclusively to Inca Trail permit holders.

One important detail: on the One-Day Inca Trail, access to Machu Picchu is limited by national park regulations to the upper agricultural terraces and Classic Viewpoint (Circuit 1B) — not the full guided tour of the inner citadel available on the 2-Day or 4-Day versions. The One-Day experience is centered on the extraordinary journey along the trail and the iconic arrival through the Sun Gate. Permits are strictly limited by the Peruvian government and sell out in advance, so we recommend booking as early as possible.

Itinerary

your day, hour by hour

4:00 AM — Hotel pickup & scenic train to Km 104

Your adventure begins before sunrise with a 4:00 AM pickup from your hotel in Cusco (Sacred Valley pickups in Ollantaytambo, Urubamba, Pisac, or Calca can be arranged at approximately 5:00 AM on request). You travel by comfortable private vehicle to the Ollantaytambo train station — a scenic drive of about 1 hour and 45 minutes — where you board the train at either 6:10 AM (Expedition) or 6:40 AM (Voyager), subject to availability. The scenic journey through the breathtaking Urubamba River gorge takes you directly to Kilometer 104 (Chachabamba), the official starting point of the One-Day Inca Trail.

Upper terraces of Machu Picchu — the Classic Viewpoint

From the Sun Gate, the trail descends gradually for about 45 minutes to the upper agricultural terraces of Machu Picchu — the location of the world-famous Classic Viewpoint, where the iconic photograph of the citadel with Huayna Picchu rising behind it is taken. This is a vantage point most visitors never see, as it is only accessible on foot via the Inca Trail. Your guide introduces the significance of the Guardian's House and the surrounding terraces as you take photographs and absorb the extraordinary view. Please note that One-Day participants' access is limited to the upper terraces and Classic Viewpoint (Circuit 1B); the full guided tour of the inner citadel is available on the 2-Day and 4-Day packages.

Aguas Calientes — dinner & return train to Cusco

After your time at the upper terraces, you board the included 30-minute bus down to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Town), arriving in the early evening for a well-earned dinner at a local restaurant (approximately 5:30 to 6:00 PM). You then board the return train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo (Expedition or Voyager class, departing at approximately 6:20 or 7:00 PM) for the 1.5-hour journey, where your private transfer is waiting with a name sign for the comfortable 1.5-hour drive back to Cusco, dropping you at your hotel at approximately 10:00 PM.

Good to know

• Student discount requirement. The student price is for eligible travelers aged 25 or younger with an original university-issued PVC plastic card showing the university name, your full name, photo, and an expiration date valid through the year of your visit or the following year. ISIC cards are not accepted. Please email photos of both sides of your student ID at the time of booking.
• Deposit. A non-refundable deposit of $200 USD per person confirms your reservation and is used immediately to purchase your official Inca Trail permit and Machu Picchu entrance ticket, which cannot be refunded, modified, or transferred once purchased. Card payments carry a 2.9% processing fee online (3.9% at our office).
• Remaining balance. If you paid only the deposit, the balance is settled at least 24 hours before the tour begins — online, in cash at our Cusco office (USD or soles), or by card (3.9% fee).
• Cancellations & date changes. The $200 USD deposit is non-refundable under any circumstances, and your permit and Machu Picchu ticket are valid for the original date only and cannot be transferred. If you paid in full and cancel, the remaining balance is refunded minus the $200 deposit. Date changes are subject to permit availability and require new permits, tickets, and a new $200 deposit.
• Passport validity. Inca Trail permits are issued in your name and are non-transferable, so passport details must be completely accurate. If your passport expires within 6 months of your entry date to Peru, renew it before traveling and update your details with our team.
