Overview

If you have always dreamed of walking the legendary Inca Trail to Machu Picchu but do not have the time for the classic 4-day route, the 2-Day Short Inca Trail is the perfect solution. This compact yet deeply rewarding adventure delivers everything that makes the Inca Trail so special — original stone pathways, extraordinary Inca archaeological sites, lush cloud forest, and the most iconic arrival at Machu Picchu imaginable — all within two unforgettable days.

Beginning at Kilometer 104, the official starting point of the Short Inca Trail, this 12-kilometer trek takes you through some of the most beautiful and historically significant terrain in the entire Andes. Along the way, you will explore the remarkable ruins of Chachabamba and the spectacular Wiñay Wayna archaeological site — one of the finest and most visually impressive Inca complexes on the entire trail — before arriving at the legendary Inti Punku (Sun Gate), where one of the most breathtaking views in Peru awaits: Machu Picchu, revealed from above, in all its ancient glory.

What makes this experience truly exceptional is the two-day Machu Picchu access included in the package. On Day 1, you arrive through the Sun Gate and reach the iconic Classic Viewpoint — the famous panoramic vantage point that produces the most celebrated photograph in all of Peru, accessible only to Inca Trail permit holders. On Day 2, you return for a comprehensive guided tour of the full citadel, exploring the temples, plazas, and ceremonial structures of the inner archaeological zone in depth.

This tour is designed for all fitness levels and is ideal for families, couples, solo travelers, and groups who want an authentic, immersive, and accessible Inca Trail experience. Every detail is handled by our team — from securing your official Inca Trail permits and Machu Picchu entrance tickets to managing all transportation, accommodation in Aguas Calientes, meals, and the return journey to Cusco.

Important: Short Inca Trail permits are strictly limited by the Peruvian government to just 250 people per day (including guides and support staff), with only approximately 150 spots available for trekkers across all operators combined. Permits sell out well in advance, so we recommend booking at least 2 to 4 months ahead to secure your preferred date.

Why you'll love this trek

  • Walk the legendary Inca Trail to the Sun Gate — the highlights of the classic route in two days.

  • Includes two days of Machu Picchu access — the trail on Day 1, a full guided tour on Day 2.
  • Permits limited to 250 people a day — book well ahead to secure your spot.

DAY1
CUSCO → KM 104 → WIÑAY WAYNA → SUN GATE → MACHU PICCHU VIEWPOINT → AGUAS CALIENTES

Your adventure begins before sunrise with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Cusco, scheduled between 3:45 and 4:15 AM. For travelers staying in the Sacred Valley (Ollantaytambo, Urubamba, Calca, or Pisac), pickup can be arranged at approximately 5:00 AM upon request. You will travel by comfortable private vehicle through the stunning Sacred Valley as it awakens in the early morning light, arriving at Ollantaytambo train station to board your train at approximately 6:10 or 6:40 AM (subject to availability). The scenic train ride takes you through the breathtaking Urubamba River gorge to Kilometer 104 (Chachabamba) — the official starting point of the Short Inca Trail. At Km 104, your professional guide will greet you, verify your permits at the official Inca Trail checkpoint, and provide a brief orientation before the trek begins. Near the trailhead you will pass the Chachabamba archaeological site — a beautifully preserved ceremonial complex with intricate water channels and fountains, and your first encounter with the ancient Inca world on this route. The hike begins with a gradual 3-hour ascent from approximately 2,000 m up to 2,700 m, following original Inca stone pathways through lush tropical vegetation, cloud forest, and dramatic river valley scenery. Upon reaching Wiñay Wayna — which means "Forever Young" in Quechua — you will be rewarded with one of the most spectacular Inca archaeological sites on the entire Short Inca Trail: a dramatic series of agricultural terraces, ceremonial platforms, and intricate fountains cascading down a steep hillside in a breathtaking cloud forest setting. Your packed picnic lunch is served here. After lunch and a well-earned rest, the trail continues for approximately 2 more hours along a predominantly flat and beautifully scenic path to the legendary Inti Punku (Sun Gate) — the moment every Short Inca Trail trekker works toward. From the Sun Gate, accessible only to Inca Trail permit holders, you will enjoy your first unforgettable view of Machu Picchu from above. A 45-minute downhill hike then brings you to the upper agricultural terraces of Machu Picchu — the location of the world-famous Classic Viewpoint, where the iconic postcard photograph is taken. You will spend approximately one hour taking in this extraordinary vantage point before boarding the included 30-minute bus down to the town of Aguas Calientes, where your guide will escort you to your hotel. In the evening, you will enjoy a special dinner at a local restaurant and go over the plan for Day 2 with your guide.

DAY2
MACHU PICCHU FULL GUIDED TOUR & RETURN TO CUSCO

Day 2 begins early with a wake-up call at 4:30 AM and breakfast at your hotel at 5:00 AM — essential preparation for what will be the most memorable morning of your entire trip. After breakfast, you will make your way to the bus station to board one of the first departures from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu. Buses begin running at 5:30 AM and depart every few minutes on a first-come, first-served basis, and the scenic 30-minute ride takes you directly to the main entrance of the citadel, which opens at 6:00 AM. Once inside, your expert guide will lead you through a comprehensive 2 to 2.5-hour guided tour of the inner citadel — the extraordinary lower archaeological zone that contains the most iconic and historically significant structures of the entire site. Your guide will take you through the temples, royal palaces, ceremonial plazas, and agricultural sectors of Machu Picchu, sharing the rich history, fascinating mythology, astronomical significance, and architectural ingenuity of the Inca civilization. After the guided tour, you will have approximately 30 minutes of free personal time to explore independently. (Please note that the visiting circuit and entry time may vary based on government availability; our team always prioritizes the earliest available entry times and the best available circuit at the time of booking.) If you booked an optional mountain hike — Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain ($60 USD each) — your guide will assist you in reaching the correct entrance at your designated time; only one mountain can be climbed per visit, and both hikes are unguided. After your Machu Picchu visit, take the 30-minute bus back down to Aguas Calientes, where you will have free time to relax, explore the town, browse the local artisan market, or enjoy lunch at your own expense. Then make your way to the train station to board the return train to Ollantaytambo, typically departing at 2:30 PM or 2:55 PM (Expedition or Voyager class, approximately 1.5 hours). Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, your private transfer will be waiting with a sign bearing your name for the 2-hour drive back to Cusco, dropping you off directly at your hotel at approximately 7:00 to 7:30 PM.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Short Inca Trail and how does it differ from the 4-Day Classic Inca Trail?
The Short Inca Trail is a 12-kilometer, 2-day version of the Classic Inca Trail, beginning at Kilometer 104 rather than Kilometer 82. It covers the final and arguably most beautiful section of the original route — including Wiñay Wayna, the Sun Gate, and the iconic Classic Viewpoint — in just two days. Unlike the 4-day version, it does not cross Dead Woman's Pass or visit the earlier archaeological sites of the full route. It is more accessible in terms of time and physical demand, while still delivering the authentic Inca Trail experience and the privilege of arriving at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate.
Is the 2-Day Short Inca Trail suitable for beginners?
Yes, the 2-Day Short Inca Trail is suitable for travelers with a reasonable level of fitness. The 12-kilometer route features a gradual 3-hour ascent on Day 1, followed by a mostly flat 2-hour section to the Sun Gate, and a final 45-minute descent to the upper terraces of Machu Picchu. It is considerably less demanding than the 4-day version and is appropriate for families, older travelers, and those without extensive trekking experience, provided they are in reasonable physical health and have spent time acclimatizing in Cusco beforehand.
Do I need to book Inca Trail permits in advance?
Yes — absolutely. Short Inca Trail permits are strictly limited to approximately 150 trekker spots per day and sell out well in advance, particularly during the high season (April to October). We recommend booking at least 2 to 4 months in advance to secure your preferred departure date. Once permits are sold out for a given date, no additional spots can be made available by any operator.
What does the two-day Machu Picchu access include?
The two-day Machu Picchu access is one of the most valuable features of this tour. On Day 1, you arrive at Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate and spend approximately one hour at the upper agricultural terraces and the iconic Classic Viewpoint — a perspective available exclusively to Inca Trail permit holders. On Day 2, you enter the lower archaeological zone for a comprehensive 2 to 2.5-hour guided tour of the full inner citadel, including all major temples, plazas, and residential sectors. Together, these two visits give you a complete and deeply immersive experience of Machu Picchu from both its most famous viewpoint and its extraordinary interior.
What is Wiñay Wayna and why is it significant?
Wiñay Wayna, meaning "Forever Young" in Quechua, is one of the most impressive and visually dramatic Inca archaeological sites on the entire Short Inca Trail. Featuring a cascading series of agricultural terraces, ceremonial platforms, and intricate ritual water channels built into a steep cloud forest hillside, it is considered one of the finest examples of Inca architecture accessible on foot. Your guide will explain its historical and ceremonial significance during your exploration on Day 1.
Are Inca Trail permits refundable or transferable?
No. Inca Trail permits are non-refundable and non-transferable under any circumstances. They are issued in your name by the Government of Peru, tied to your passport number, and cannot be modified, cancelled, or given to another person. This is why the deposit required to confirm your booking is non-refundable. It is essential that all passport details provided at the time of booking are completely accurate.
Will the altitude affect me on the 2-Day Short Inca Trail?
The Short Inca Trail reaches a maximum altitude of approximately 2,700 m at Wiñay Wayna, which is significantly lower than the 4,215 m of Dead Woman's Pass on the classic route. However, travelers coming from sea level may still feel some effects of altitude, particularly on the uphill sections of Day 1. We recommend spending at least 2 days acclimatizing in Cusco before the trek, drinking plenty of water, trying coca leaf tea, and avoiding alcohol during your first days at altitude.
What happens if it rains on the trail?
The Short Inca Trail passes through cloud forest terrain, and rain is always possible regardless of the season — particularly during the rainy season (November to April). A waterproof rain jacket or poncho is essential and should be kept immediately accessible in your daypack at all times. Our guides are experienced in all weather conditions and the trail is well-maintained year-round. The trek operates in light to moderate rain — cancellation only occurs in the event of genuinely dangerous conditions, in which case our team will communicate all options directly with you.
Is there porter service on the 2-Day Short Inca Trail?
No. Unlike the Classic 4-Day Inca Trail, the 2-Day Short Inca Trail does not include porter service. You will carry all your own belongings throughout the hike. For this reason, packing light is essential — a small daypack of 20 to 25 liters with only the essentials is strongly recommended. Trekking poles are particularly helpful on this route and are available to rent from us for $15 USD per pair.
