Overview

For travelers who want the most complete, most immersive, and most adventurous version of the Inca Jungle Trail experience, the 4-Day Inca Jungle Trail to Machu Picchu delivers everything the 3-day version offers — and significantly more. This extraordinary four-day, three-night adventure is the perfect fusion of heart-pumping activities, spectacular Andean and jungle scenery, authentic cultural encounters, and the ultimate reward of Machu Picchu — all in one seamlessly organized and expertly guided experience.

Across four incredible days, you will combine downhill mountain biking, white-water rafting, jungle trekking, a visit to the natural Colcamayo Hot Springs, zip-lining, and a fully guided tour of Machu Picchu — making this the most diverse and action-packed route to the New Seven Wonders of the World available from Cusco.

What makes the 4-day version genuinely special — and the key reason many travelers choose it over the 3-day itinerary — is Day 2, a full-day 22-kilometer hiking journey along a beautifully preserved section of the original Inca trail that historically connected Machu Picchu with Vilcabamba, the last capital of the Inca Empire. This ancient pathway winds through breathtaking coffee, coca, banana, and yucca plantations, offers sweeping panoramic views of the Vilcanota Valley, and leads you to the extraordinary Colcamayo Hot Springs — one of the most restorative and memorable experiences on the entire route.

On Day 1, you will descend an exhilarating 65-kilometer cycling route from the high Andean pass of Abra Málaga at 4,350 m / 14,271 ft, followed by a thrilling white-water rafting session on the Santa María River. Day 3 brings the zipline adventure — four cables and a dramatic suspension bridge crossing — followed by a scenic 3-hour jungle hike to Aguas Calientes. And Day 4 is dedicated entirely to Machu Picchu, with a comprehensive professional guided tour of the most famous Inca citadel in the world. All activities are led by certified professional guides with comprehensive safety equipment and a dedicated support vehicle throughout the biking section, making this adventure accessible and safe for most fitness levels.

Why you'll love this trek

  • The ultimate multi-adventure to Machu Picchu — biking, rafting, zip-lining and trekking in one trip.
  • Bomb down a 65 km cycling descent from the Abra Málaga pass (4,350 m) on Day 1.
  • Raft white water, soak in the Colcamayo hot springs and fly through the jungle canopy.
  • The 4-day version adds a full 22 km hiking day along original Inca paths.

DAY1
CUSCO → SANTA MARÍA: DOWNHILL BIKING & WHITE-WATER RAFTING

Your adventure begins at 6:00 AM with a hotel pickup in Cusco, followed by a spectacular drive through the Sacred Valley of the Incas, with breathtaking panoramic views of the Vilcabamba and Vilcanota mountain ranges, charming Andean towns, and the striking landscape of the high Andes. After approximately 2 hours, you will stop in the extraordinary ancient Inca town of Ollantaytambo for a hearty breakfast at a local restaurant. Continuing upward, you reach the high mountain pass of Abra Málaga at 4,350 m / 14,271 ft, where your guide provides a comprehensive safety briefing and fits every participant with all the necessary biking equipment — helmet, gloves, knee pads, and a high-quality mountain bike — before the exhilarating descent begins. The centerpiece of Day 1 is the spectacular 65-kilometer downhill cycling route from Abra Málaga down to the town of Santa María at 1,430 m / 4,691 ft — one of the most dramatic elevation descents and most visually stunning cycling experiences in all of Peru. The route follows paved mountain roads and is accessible for most fitness levels, with your professional guide leading the group at a comfortable pace and a dedicated support vehicle available throughout. Along the way you will stop at the fascinating Huamanmarca Inca site. After lunch and the final section of the descent, you arrive in Santa María for an adrenaline-pumping 1 to 1.5-hour white-water rafting session on the Santa María River, navigating thrilling rapids through lush tropical landscapes — no prior rafting experience required. Afterward, you will check into your hotel in Santa María, shower, rest, and gather at a local restaurant for a delicious dinner.

SANTA MARÍA → SANTA TERESA: JUNGLE TREK, INCA TRAIL & COLCAMAYO HOT SPRINGS

Day 2 begins with a hearty breakfast at a local restaurant before setting off on what many travelers describe as the most memorable and culturally immersive day of the entire 4-Day Inca Jungle Trail. After a 45-minute warm-up hike along the car route, you will join the original Inca trail — the ancient pathway that historically connected Machu Picchu with Vilcabamba, the last capital of the Inca Empire. Walking on these original stone pathways, you will pass through stunning plantations of bananas, coca, yucca, and coffee, enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the Vilcanota Valley, and experience the remarkable biodiversity of the tropical Andean landscape, while your guide shares fascinating stories and historical context. After approximately 3 hours on the original Inca trail, you will arrive at the charming village of Quellomayo for a well-deserved lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, the trail continues along the Vilcanota River for a further 3.5-hour hike to the famous Colcamayo Hot Springs — a natural outdoor thermal oasis nestled in a beautiful mountain setting, where you will spend a couple of hours soaking in the warm therapeutic pools (entrance fee of approximately S/ 10 soles per person, paid on site, not included). A final 45-minute hike then brings you to the town of Santa Teresa, where you check into your hotel for the night and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 3 begins with an early wake-up call and a hearty breakfast to fuel an exciting and varied day. At approximately 8:00 AM, the zipline company will collect you from your hotel and transport you to the zipline base. After a comprehensive safety briefing and equipment fitting, you will enjoy a thrilling 2-hour zipline adventure featuring four exciting cables crossing breathtaking mountain-to-mountain landscapes in the Santa Teresa valley, plus a dramatic suspension bridge crossing high above the valley floor — all safety equipment and certified operators included, no prior experience required. After the zipline, you will board a vehicle for a 1-hour scenic drive to Hidroeléctrica, where you will enjoy a well-deserved lunch at a local restaurant. Then you will set off on one of the most enjoyable and scenic walks of the entire Inca Jungle Trail — an 11-kilometer flat hike along the railway tracks from Hidroeléctrica to the town of Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Town), winding through spectacular lush jungle scenery with the Urubamba River flowing alongside you. As you approach the town, your first glimpses of Machu Picchu appear through the valley. Upon arrival, your guide will escort you to your hotel, and after freshening up you will head to a local restaurant for dinner at approximately 7:00 PM, followed by a final briefing about the Machu Picchu visit on Day 4.

DAY4
MACHU PICCHU GUIDED TOUR & RETURN TO CUSCO

The final day of your 4-Day Inca Jungle Trail adventure is dedicated entirely to Machu Picchu — the legendary Inca citadel, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and the crowning reward for four extraordinary days. There are two ways to reach the main entrance from your hotel. On foot (approximately 1.5 hours): begin at approximately 4:30 AM with a 30-minute flat walk from your hotel to the Puente Ruinas checkpoint, followed by approximately 1 hour of uphill hiking of around 1,700 steps. By shuttle bus (approximately 30 minutes): buses depart from 5:30 AM every 5 to 10 minutes, with tickets at $12 USD one way, purchased the night before or on the morning of your visit. Once inside, your professional bilingual guide will lead you through a comprehensive 2.5-hour guided tour of Machu Picchu, following the circuit assigned to your entrance ticket, bringing the history, architecture, astronomy, and sacred significance of the citadel to life. After the guided tour, you will have approximately 30 minutes of free personal time to explore independently. Optional mountain hikes require a separate ticket: Huayna Picchu Mountain ($60 USD), the iconic peak rising dramatically behind the citadel (limited to 400 visitors daily, round trip 2 to 2.5 hours, not recommended for those with vertigo), or Machu Picchu Mountain ($60 USD), with panoramic views of the citadel and surrounding valleys at 3,080 m (round trip 3 to 3.5 hours via original Inca stone pathways). For the return to Cusco you have two options. By train (recommended): return to Aguas Calientes on foot (1 hour) or by bus ($12 USD), board the train to Ollantaytambo (1.5-hour scenic journey), then continue by private tourist vehicle to Cusco (2 hours); trains typically depart between 2:30 PM and 3:20 PM, arriving in Cusco at approximately 6:30 PM. By car via Hidroeléctrica: begin your 3-hour walk from Machu Picchu to Hidroeléctrica no later than 11:00 AM, arrive by 2:30 PM to catch the 3:00 PM vehicle to Cusco (drive time 6 to 7 hours, estimated arrival approximately 10:00 PM). The car return is only viable if your Machu Picchu entry time is between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between the 4-Day and 3-Day Inca Jungle Trail?
The key difference is Day 2. The 4-day version adds a full-day 22-kilometer hiking journey along the original Inca trail that historically connected Machu Picchu with Vilcabamba, passing through extraordinary coffee, coca, banana, and yucca plantations with sweeping valley views. The day culminates at the Colcamayo Hot Springs — one of the most memorable and restorative experiences on the entire route. This dedicated cultural immersion and trekking day makes the 4-day version significantly more complete and deeply rewarding, and is the primary reason most travelers who have time choose it over the 3-day itinerary.
Is the 4-Day Inca Jungle Trail suitable for beginners?
Yes. The tour is specifically designed to be accessible for most fitness levels. The downhill biking on Day 1 follows paved mountain roads and requires no prior cycling experience. The rafting requires no prior experience and is rated moderate. The hike on Day 2 is long but follows a predominantly moderate trail at low altitude. The zipline on Day 3 is fully operated by certified professionals. Day 4 is easy. A reasonable level of general fitness and at least 2 days of acclimatization in Cusco are recommended, but no special skills or experience are required for any activity.
What is the Colcamayo Hot Springs experience on Day 2?
The Colcamayo Hot Springs are a set of natural outdoor thermal pools located in the Santa Teresa valley, fed by geothermal springs and surrounded by beautiful mountain and jungle scenery. After a full day of hiking on the original Inca trail, soaking in the warm therapeutic pools is a deeply relaxing and genuinely earned reward. You will have approximately 2 hours at the hot springs before continuing the short final hike to Santa Teresa for the night. The entrance fee of approximately S/ 10 soles per person is not included in the tour price and is paid directly on site.
What does the original Inca trail section on Day 2 involve?
The original Inca trail section on Day 2 follows the ancient stone pathway that once connected Machu Picchu with Vilcabamba — the last refuge of the Inca Empire. This historically significant route winds through subtropical plantations of coffee, coca, banana, yucca, and other tropical crops, offering sweeping panoramic views of the Vilcanota Valley. Your guide will share fascinating historical context throughout the hike, making this a genuinely culturally immersive experience that goes far beyond physical activity.
What altitude does the 4-Day Inca Jungle Trail reach?
The highest point of the tour is Abra Málaga at 4,350 m / 14,271 ft on Day 1, from which the route descends rapidly into the lower, warmer valley terrain. The majority of Days 2, 3, and 4 are spent at altitudes between 1,400 m and 2,700 m — significantly lower than the Salkantay Trek or Classic Inca Trail. We still recommend spending at least 2 days acclimatizing in Cusco before the tour begins, particularly for the early section on Day 1 at Abra Málaga.
What is the difference between the train and car return options?
The train option is more comfortable, faster, and more scenic. Departing from Aguas Calientes between 2:30 and 3:20 PM, the 1.5-hour train ride to Ollantaytambo followed by a 2-hour private transfer returns you to Cusco at approximately 6:30 PM. The car option is less expensive but considerably longer — a 3-hour hike from Machu Picchu back to Hidroeléctrica is required before catching the 3:00 PM vehicle, arriving in Cusco at approximately 10:00 PM. The car option is only viable if your Machu Picchu circuit entry time is between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM.
Which Machu Picchu circuit is included?
The 4-Day Inca Jungle Trail includes a Machu Picchu entrance ticket for Circuit 2 — the Classic Route providing access to the iconic panoramic viewpoint and approximately 70% of the citadel. If Circuit 2 is unavailable at the time of booking, our team will secure the best available alternative circuit to ensure your visit takes place as planned.
Is there a luggage transfer service on the 4-Day Inca Jungle Trail?
The tour does not include a standard luggage transfer service. You will carry your own backpack during the hiking sections of the route. During the biking, rafting, and zipline activities, backpacks are stored securely. If you prefer not to carry your bag during the hiking sections, it is sometimes possible to arrange additional transport through your guide at a supplementary cost — though most travelers find the hiking sections manageable with a well-packed daypack of 25 to 30 liters.
How does the 4-Day Inca Jungle Trail differ from the Salkantay Trek?
The Salkantay Trek focuses primarily on high-altitude mountain trekking — crossing the 4,700 m Salkantay Pass through dramatic Andean highland scenery. The Inca Jungle Trail is a multi-activity adventure at lower, warmer altitudes, combining biking, rafting, original Inca trail hiking, hot springs, zipline, and jungle trekking. The Inca Jungle Trail is generally less physically demanding per day than the Salkantay Trek and is set in warmer, more tropical landscapes. Both routes arrive at Machu Picchu and include a professional guided tour of the citadel.
