Overview

Nestled high in the Peruvian Andes, Humantay Lake is one of the most breathtaking natural wonders in the Cusco region, and one you simply cannot miss. Sitting at the foot of the snow-capped Humantay Mountain, this stunning glacial lake captivates every visitor with its impossibly vivid turquoise waters, dramatic mountain backdrop, and the serene beauty of the surrounding Andean wilderness.

On this full-day hiking adventure, you will follow a scenic trail through one of Peru's most spectacular landscapes, passing high-altitude terrain framed by towering snow-capped peaks, including the iconic Salkantay Mountain. Along the way you may encounter herds of llamas and alpacas roaming freely across the hillsides, adding to the magic of the experience.

We collect you directly from your accommodation in Cusco between 4:30 and 5:00 AM and return you to Plaza Regocijo, in the heart of the city, at around 6:00 to 6:30 PM. Departures run daily, year-round, with online reservations accepted up to one day in advance.

Itinerary

your day, hour by hour

Hotel pick-up in Cusco

From 4:00 to 5:00 AM. Your adventure begins early with a comfortable pick-up directly from your hotel in Cusco's historic center. The exact pick-up time may vary slightly depending on your hotel's location. Once everyone is on board, we set off toward the Andes.

Scenic drive and breakfast in Mollepata

As the sun rises over the mountains, we enjoy a beautiful drive through the Andean countryside, passing traditional villages and dramatic landscapes. In the district of Mollepata you sit down to a hearty Andean breakfast, the perfect way to energize before the hike: fresh fruit juice, hot drinks, bread, and more, while taking in the peaceful mountain surroundings.

Drive to Soraypampa and trail orientation

After breakfast we continue by vehicle to Soraypampa, the official starting point of the hike. Your guide gives a brief orientation, including safety tips, trail information, and what to expect on the way up. It is also a good moment to adjust your gear, apply sunscreen, and prepare for the climb.

The hike to Humantay Lake

The hike from Challacancha to the lake takes approximately two hours at a steady pace, gaining altitude through a scenic mountain trail. As you ascend you are rewarded with panoramic views of snow-capped peaks, rolling hills, and the majestic Salkantay Mountain in the distance. Your bilingual guide shares insights about the local flora, fauna, geology, and the cultural significance of the area. For those who prefer not to hike, horses are available for rent at the trailhead.

Free time at Humantay Lake

Upon reaching the lake you are greeted by one of the most awe-inspiring sights in the Peruvian Andes: the magnificent Humantay Lake, at the foot of the snow-capped Humantay Mountain, shimmering with its iconic vivid turquoise waters. You will have free time to explore, take photos, soak in the scenery, and, if you wish, take part in a traditional Andean offering ceremony (pago a la tierra), a meaningful ritual to give thanks to Pachamama (Mother Earth).

Return hike and buffet lunch in Mollepata

After your time at the lake we descend along the same trail back to Challacancha; the downhill walk offers a different perspective and is generally easier. Once we reach the vehicles, we drive back to Mollepata, where a well-earned buffet lunch awaits: a generous selection of traditional Peruvian dishes, soups, salads, and vegetarian options, all prepared with fresh local ingredients.

Return to Cusco

Approx. 6:00 to 6:30 PM. With full hearts and lasting memories, we make our way back to Cusco and drop you off at Plaza Regocijo, in the heart of the historic city center, a short walk from the Main Square and most hotels.

Is Humantay Lake worth visiting?
Without a doubt. Humantay Lake is one of the most stunning natural sites in the entire Cusco region. This pristine glacial lake sits at 4,200 meters above sea level, dazzling visitors with its vivid turquoise waters set against the backdrop of the snow-capped Humantay and Salkantay peaks. It receives far fewer visitors than Machu Picchu, making for a peaceful and truly intimate experience that most travelers describe as a highlight of their trip to Peru.
How difficult is the hike?
The hike is rated moderate. Starting from Soraypampa at 3,900 m, the trail climbs approximately 400 meters over 3 km to reach the lake at 4,200 m. Most people complete the ascent in 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on fitness and altitude adjustment, while the descent takes around 1 hour. The main challenge is the altitude rather than the distance. Trekking poles are included for extra support and stability.
What is the best time of year to visit?
The best time to visit is during the dry season, from May to October, when skies are clear and the turquoise color of the lake is at its most vivid. Morning light between 9:00 and 11:00 AM offers the best conditions for photography. Tours operate year-round, though during the rainy season (November to April) the trail can be muddy and cloud cover may partially affect the views.
What should I know before the hike?
Acclimatize first: the lake sits at 4,200 m, so we recommend spending at least 2 nights in Cusco before the tour and consulting your doctor about altitude medication if needed. Arrive well-rested, as the hike involves a significant elevation gain. Dress in layers and bring a hat, gloves, and a rain poncho or waterproof jacket. Bring enough water and high-energy snacks, as there are no vendors along the trail. Please respect the environment: stay on marked trails and carry out all rubbish.
