“Moderate” or “challenging” can mean very different things at 4,000 metres. Here's what our difficulty levels really mean, how to match a trek to your fitness, and why altitude — not distance — is usually the hard part.
What makes an Andean trek hard
On most Cusco routes the real challenge isn't the number of kilometres — it's the thin air. Above 3,500 m you breathe harder, tire faster and recover more slowly. Add several days of walking, steep passes and cold nights, and a “moderate” trek can feel tough if you arrive straight from sea level.
So we rate every trek on three things together: maximum altitude, daily hours on foot, and how many days in a row you're out there.
Our difficulty scale
| Level | What to expect | Example | Max altitude |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | Short walks, mostly by vehicle | Sacred Valley, Maras & Moray | 3,800 m |
| Moderate | 3–6 h walking, one big climb | Humantay Lake, Rainbow Mountain | 5,000 m |
| Challenging | Multi-day, high passes | Salkantay, Inca Trail 4-day | 4,600 m |
| Demanding | Long days, very high & remote | Ausangate trek | 5,000 m+ |
Difficulty and altitude don't always match. A short day tour to Rainbow Mountain is “moderate” yet climbs higher than most multi-day treks — the altitude is what makes it hard.
How fit do I need to be
You don't need to be an athlete, but a little preparation makes every trek far more enjoyable:
- Walk or hike regularly for a few weeks before your trip
- Add some stairs or hills to build your legs and lungs
- Break in your hiking shoes well before you fly
- On multi-day treks, horses or porters carry the heavy bags — you only carry a day-pack
Altitude beats fitness
The single best thing you can do is acclimatize: spend at least two days in Cusco (3,400 m) before any high trek, walk slowly the first day, drink plenty of water and don't rush. Fit travellers who skip this often struggle more than unfit ones who take it easy.
