Machu Picchu is open year-round, and every season has its own character. The short version: May and September are the sweet spot. Here is what to expect.
Dry season (May–October)
The most reliable weather: sunny mornings, clear skies and the best photos. It is also the busy season, so book tickets, trains and Inca Trail permits well ahead. July and August are the busiest.
Shoulder months (May & September)
Our favourite window — dry-season skies with slightly thinner crowds and easier availability. If you can choose, aim for these.
Rainy season (November–March)
Lush, green and quiet, with dramatic mist over the citadel. Expect afternoon showers and pack a good rain jacket. Note that the Inca Trail closes every February for maintenance (Machu Picchu itself stays open).
Morning or afternoon?
Early entries (6–8 AM) are cooler and quieter with soft light; late morning is sunniest; afternoon light is golden and crowds thin out. We help you pick the entry time and circuit that suit your trip.
