This compact yet deeply immersive adventure takes you into the heart of the Salkantay range, covering two of its most iconic highlights in just two unforgettable days. On Day 1 you hike to the legendary Humantay Lake, a stunning turquoise glacial lake beneath snow-capped peaks, then settle in for the night at the exclusive Quiswarniyoc Private Camp (4,000 m) — where you sleep in a Crystal Igloo, a glass cabin that lets you fall asleep surrounded by mountain peaks and a breathtaking starlit sky.

On Day 2 you face the most challenging and rewarding section of the route — the ascent to the magnificent Salkantay Pass at 4,630 m / 15,190 ft, the highest point of the legendary Salkantay Trail, where sweeping panoramic views of glaciers and snow-capped peaks stretch in every direction. It is the ideal choice for travelers who want a genuine high-altitude mountain experience within a perfectly manageable two-day timeframe.

Day-by-day itinerary

2 days · what you'll do each day

DAY1
Cusco → Humantay Lake → Quiswarniyoc Private Camp (Crystal Igloo night)

Your adventure begins with an early pickup from your hotel in Cusco between 5:00 and 5:15 AM. After the group assembles, you drive by comfortable tourist vehicle toward the town of Mollepata — about a 2-hour scenic drive through the Andean highlands — where you stop for a delicious, energizing breakfast at a local restaurant. This is also where the Humantay Lake entrance fee of S/ 20 soles per person is paid to the local municipality (not included in the tour price — please bring cash in soles). After breakfast, you continue for another hour to Soraypampa (3,900 m), the official trailhead, where you meet your dedicated team of muleteers and horses and hand over your duffel bags (up to 7 kg per person) so you can hike comfortably with just a daypack. The hike from Soraypampa to Humantay Lake (4,200 m) takes about 2 hours — a gradual ascent for the first hour followed by a steeper climb — and rewards you with one of the most breathtaking sights in the entire Cusco region: a dazzling turquoise glacial lake cradled between snow-capped peaks. You have generous free time at the lake to explore and photograph while your guide shares its geology, history, and spiritual significance. From the lake, a 2-hour descent brings you to the exclusive Quiswarniyoc Private Camp (4,000 m), arriving in the early afternoon for a fresh, wholesome lunch. The rest of the afternoon is yours: relax among waterfalls, mountain streams, and friendly llamas with Mount Salkantay directly in front of you, or take the short optional hike to the Salkantay Viewpoint for a spectacular panorama. Tonight you experience the crown jewel of the adventure — a night in one of our exclusive Crystal Igloos, glass cabins offering 360-degree views of the peaks and a breathtaking display of stars overhead, each equipped with a comfortable mattress, pillow, sleeping pad, and soft ambient lighting.

DAY2
Quiswarniyoc → Salkantay Pass (4,630 m) → Mollepata → Cusco

The day begins gently at 5:00 AM with a warm cup of traditional coca-leaf tea, the classic Andean remedy to help your body warm up for the ascent ahead. A hearty breakfast is served at 5:45 AM to fuel the most demanding section of the trek. Shortly afterward, the trek begins with a steady, manageable ascent toward the Salkantay Pass — the highest point of the legendary Salkantay Trail — taking between 3 and 4 hours, with the dramatic snow-capped peak of Mount Salkantay growing more imposing with every step. On reaching the summit at 4,630 m / 15,190 ft, you are treated to a sweeping 360-degree panorama of glaciers, snow-capped peaks, and vast high-altitude wilderness stretching endlessly in every direction. Your guide shares the spiritual significance of the Salkantay Apu (mountain deity) in Andean cosmology and leads a brief, moving traditional ceremony to honor the mountain spirits — one of the most memorable cultural moments on any trek in the region. After time at the pass to absorb the views, you begin the 2.5-hour descent back to Soraypampa, where your transport is waiting. From there you are driven to Mollepata for a well-deserved and delicious lunch at a local restaurant — a perfect celebration of two remarkable days in the mountains. After lunch, you board your vehicle for the comfortable 2-hour return journey to Cusco, arriving back in the city at approximately 6:00 PM.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to hike to Humantay Lake?
The hike from Soraypampa to Humantay Lake takes about 1.5 to 2 hours on the way up, depending on your pace and fitness, and roughly 1.5 hours to descend the same trail.
What is the best time of year to do this trek?
Both Humantay Lake and the Salkantay Pass can be visited year-round, but the best conditions are generally in the dry season (May to November), when skies are clearer, trails are drier, and the views are at their most spectacular. The rainy season (December to April) is still possible with the right preparation.
Do I need to bring my passport for this tour?
Your original passport is not mandatory for this trek, but we always recommend carrying a photocopy in case of any unexpected identity checks or emergencies along the route.
What type of vehicles are used for this tour?
We use modern Mercedes-Benz Sprinter minibuses — comfortable, reliable tourist vehicles that carry all the required documentation from Peruvian transport authorities and are maintained daily.
Will the altitude affect me on this trek?
Altitude can affect travelers differently and should be taken seriously. The Salkantay Pass reaches 4,630 m and the campsite sits at 4,000 m. We strongly recommend spending at least 2 to 3 days acclimatizing in Cusco before this trek, and scheduling it toward the end of your stay rather than the beginning if your time is limited.
What can I do to prevent altitude sickness?
Spend at least two full days in Cusco before the trek, drink plenty of water, drink coca-leaf tea, eat light meals the day before, avoid alcohol during your first days at altitude, and take any medication prescribed by your doctor. Most importantly, listen to your body and pace yourself — our guides are experienced in recognizing and responding to altitude symptoms.
What makes the Crystal Igloo accommodation special?
The Crystal Igloos at Quiswarniyoc Private Camp are among the most unique overnight experiences on any trekking route in the Cusco region. These glass cabins offer unobstructed panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and a breathtaking view of the starlit sky from your bed, each equipped with a comfortable mattress, pillow, sleeping pad, and soft ambient lighting.
How do I book this tour?
Click the "BOOK ONLINE" button on this page, fill in the required details, and complete your reservation in a few minutes. If you prefer to speak with a specialist first, message us on WhatsApp at +51 932 411 206 — our team is available 7 days a week and happy to answer any questions.
Is a deposit required and what is the cancellation policy?
Yes, a non-refundable deposit of $70 USD per person confirms your booking. If you paid in full, a cancellation at least 24 hours before departure is refunded minus the $70 deposit; cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable. You may change your start date at any time, subject to availability.
Can I ride a horse instead of hiking on this trek?
Horse riding is not formally organized as part of this itinerary. However, local community members near the trailhead often offer horse-riding services for portions of the route, particularly toward Humantay Lake, typically between S/ 60 and S/ 80 soles per person, paid directly to the local handlers. Your guide is happy to help coordinate on the day if you are interested.
